I’ve been told to consider trusts for my children in my will. Is this worthwhile and how do I accomplish this?

Yes it is worth it, especially if your children are minors, have a disability, have a mental illness or a problem with substance abuse. Not only can you save some tax, but you can create a situation where a trustee manages the child’s inheritance for a set period, with payment allowances for those things you consider important (such as education). The trust can offer asset protection but also sufficient access for your child’s well-being, and the well-being of the person charged with caring for your child following your death. Please give us a call to arrange for a meeting to discuss this further if you have not yet set this up in your will.
